intro
Sustainability in the UAE has long been a national priority but today, it’s becoming a tangible requirement for the events industry.
With the rise of regulatory frameworks, international standards, and public demand for accountability, events in the UAE are evolving fast. Sustainability is no longer something you highlight at the end of a proposal, it’s something you need to build into every layer of planning, production, and delivery.
The UAE’s leadership continues to embed sustainability into its national development model from UAE Vision 2021 and Vision 2040 to the UAE Green Agenda 2015–2030 and Net Zero by 2050.
But now, event-specific frameworks are entering the spotlight. Here’s what’s shaping the future of events in the UAE:
In 2024, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT) introduced a comprehensive Event Sustainability Guideline, modeled on respected frameworks like the UNWTO, Green Globe, and Estidama’s Pearl Rating System.
While non-binding, it provides a strategic roadmap for organizers and venues to enhance sustainability across key dimensions:
It’s setting the tone for what responsible events in Abu Dhabi should look like
For organizers seeking formal recognition, ISO 20121 offers an internationally recognized certification for sustainable event management. It’s now available through several UAE-based providers, including SGS, TÜV, and URS.
Based on the “Plan–Do–Check–Act” cycle, ISO 20121 requires:
For brands, agencies, and venues, ISO 20121 delivers credibility, risk reduction, and enhanced public image, all while contributing to the UAE’s broader ESG goals.
Starting mid-2025, the UAE Federal Climate Law (Decree 11/2024) will require emissions reporting for all high-impact sectors including large-scale events.
While still early in rollout, the implications are clear:
The shift signals a move from best practice to baseline accountability.
Events in the UAE are already starting to reflect these sustainability principles:
These aren’t experimental they’re becoming expected.
If you’re creating events in the UAE, there are now three clear layers of sustainability planning:
Tier
Framework
Purpose
1
DCT Abu Dhabi Guidelines
Strategic roadmap for more sustainable practices
2
ISO 20121 Certification
Formal accreditation and improved brand equity
3
Federal Climate Law
Mandatory emissions tracking (starting 2025)
Whether you’re organizing a single-day activation or a multi-week festival, this framework helps ensure you're building responsibly and ahead of regulation.
At LINKVIVA, we believe sustainability must be intentional, integrated, and inspiring.
We don’t treat sustainability as a checklist we use it as a creative and strategic framework for every event. Our teams are trained on DCT’s guidelines, and we’re actively embedding ISO 20121 principles across our projects.
From solar-powered builds to circular production models, we work with clients to build experiences that reflect environmental awareness and operational excellence.
Just like hotels have green stars and buildings have Pearl Ratings, events in the UAE are on track to be evaluated through sustainability performance and that’s a mark of maturity for the industry.
The UAE isn’t just committed to being a sustainable country. It’s committed to being a country where every event, big or small, plays a role in that vision.
At LINKVIVA, we’re ready. Let’s design events that aren’t just unforgettable but also responsible.
